PNS 13&O Championships Meet Recap

Wave's Senior Team turned in one of its strongest championship performances in recent years, earning an outstanding third-place finish against some of the state's top competition. The weekend was filled with record-breaking swims, breakthrough performances, and qualifying times as our athletes combined for numerous Futures and Sectionals cuts. Daniel Xia, Zach Paulsen, and Ellen Feng each rewrote the Wave record book with multiple team records, while Irene Qu led the team in scoring with an incredible 142.5 points, including relay events, to cap off a memorable championship meet.

High School

High school had six athletes competing at this meet: five from A Group and one from B. They all did fantastic and had a great meet!

  • Zach Zeng had some amazing time drops! His best race of the meet was his 100 Breast. He got out strong and smooth, built into the first 50, and came back fast! He dropped -3.61! That’s huge for him.

  • Jay Song qualified in the 50, 100, and 200 Breast. His best event, however, was his bonus! He swam the 50 Free and probably swam it better than I have ever seen him. He was super aggressive in his 50, getting his tempo up and holding that top-end speed well. Normally he doesn’t kick, but that day he did! When he got out, he said he went fast so he could go watch the World Cup final!

  • Ani Purkayastha had some quality races! She was the only swimmer from HS to qualify for Finals. She placed 17th in her 50 Back and came out a victor, moving up to 14th! She swam well and scored 3 points for Wave!

  • Kyra Yuan sustained a severe hand injury just two days before Champs. Despite the pain, she was able to drop time in her 100 Breast! She went out fast and closed it out strong! She dropped 1.37! Kyra scored 1.5 points for Wave!

  • Yuzuki Ishizuka placed 24th in her 200 Fly! She came out of the pool with real tears of joy! She was bawling her eyes out and said she was so happy it was over and that she finished without needing any survival kicks along the way. I would say that’s a big win for her! Yuzuki scored 3 points for Wave!

  • Arvin Kandiah was the only B Grouper to qualify! That’s a huge feat for that group! His best race of the meet was his 100 Free. He went into that race with the mindset, “I’m going out fast and I’m dropping time no matter what!” He dropped 6.09! He also dropped 2.44

Purple & Senior Prep

The Purple and SR Prep kids absolutely dominated the meet. It was an amazing weekend for them, and I am very happy with how well they did. The group is overall a bit younger, with the whole group being 13. But that didn’t scare them, and we knocked off bigger kids all weekend. I can’t wait to see where these kids go over the next few years. Tremendous meet for them all. Highlights:

  • Cayden Smith wrapped up a successful long-course season with a strong showing at Champs! After aging up to start the season, his biggest goal was to return to Champs with a 13-14 cut. He earned his cut in the 50 Fly and had an incredible swim this weekend, lowering his entry time. He used a strong catch and long strokes to drop a few tenths!

  • Norah Braun had a great weekend of swimming, with some great times and big races. She crushed her 400 Medley Relay split. She also crushed her 100 Breast, dropping 3 seconds in the event with a great second 50.

  • Deniz Cankaya had an amazing weekend of swimming. It is hard to pick an event for him because he crushed everything. His standout swim was his 400 IM to kick off the meet. His hard work on his breaststroke really showed, and he crushed it. Deniz score 106.5 points for Wave!

  • Aaron Chakraborty has been working hard in practice, and he had a great meet with great times throughout the weekend. His standout was his 100 Fly, where his endurance improvement showed, and he crushed his second 50 for a second time drop. Aaron scored 4 points for Wave!

  • Leo Chen was a long flyer and IMer this weekend and had some great swims and time drops. He absolutely crushed his 200 Fly, dropping 7 seconds, with an amazing back 100 where he kept his hips up and tempo consistent.

  • Abigail Gray fell asleep a freestyle distance swimmer on Wednesday night and woke up a breaststroker on Thursday morning for the meet, where she killed it all weekend. Her 50 breast was amazing, with a second-plus drop from great tempo and perfect body position.

  • Elijah Guo had some dominant swims throughout the weekend. His standout was his 50 Back, where he swam it in the relay, took some feedback, and made changes for an amazing 50 Back, dropping almost half a second. Elijah scored 2 points for Wave!

  • Fiona Herman woke up and chose SPEED for this meet. She was on fire all weekend, dropping seconds in the double digits across events. Her standout was her 200 Free Finals swim, where she went out fast and trusted her training to bring her home, posting a big-time 9-second drop in the event. Fiona scored 60.5 points for Wave!

  • Anika Lichtenberg had a great meet with some fantastic swims. She was dropping time all over, topped by her 3-second drop in 200 Back. She was driving her kick throughout the swim and maintained great body position. Anika scored 13 points for Wave!

  • Jonathan Liu dropped time throughout the weekend and was chasing his first finals swim. It came in the 50 Free, where he shaved a few tenths and snuck into Finals at 15th. He had a great swim, with a dominant kick out and a breakout off the start. Jonathan scored 28.5 points for Wave!

  • Maksim Niktenko was out all weekend long, and his freestyle swims were fantastic. His big-time swim of the meet was his 400 free. He crushed it with a great back half of the race, dropping 9 full seconds in the event. Maksim scored 0.5 points for Wave!

  • Albert O had a great weekend with some awesome and fantastic swims. He absolutely dominated his 200 Breast with a 12-second drop. He maintained great tempo throughout and broke 3:00 for the first time in the event.

  • Lillian Podolski was ready to go for this meet and had some great races. She was out fast in all her sprints and got off the blocks strong throughout. Her standout swim was her 200 Free (her FAVORITE EVENT), where she dropped 3 seconds, and her endurance improvements helped carry her through. Lillian scored 0.5 points for Wave!

  • Olivia Sellhorn was flying through the water this weekend and did an amazing job swimming ‘up’ in the 13&O relays. She crushed her three backstroke events and was moving so well. She dropped 6 seconds in her 200 Back with a great kick in the back 100 and strong finishes.

  • George Ursulenko had a great weekend of swimming, with some awesome relay swims and strong individual swims. His standout swim was his 200 Free, where he shaved 5.5 seconds. He had strong kicking throughout the race to carry that swim.

  • Ally Yuan had a great swim meet. She excelled in her individual and relay events. But my favorite swim was her time trial in the 50 Free, where she crushed a half-second drop from a great race, showing amazing kick and tempo.

Senior 1

The Senior 1 group had 24 swimmers compete at Champs. It was an absolutely incredible meet for the group. Senior Zones, Senior Sectionals, and Futures cuts were achieved. We also set several team records and one open team record. Everyone who competed stepped up big time and delivered some amazing swims. I had an absolute blast all weekend watching the kids crush their times. The hard work this group has put in this season paid off in a huge way this weekend. The group is on fire right now, and I look forward to that continuing into our Zones meets and into next year. Way to go, Senior 1! Highlights:

  • Sasha Arlouski had a very strong meet while competing in some of the toughest and longest events. His training really showed as he went best times in five events, including a phenomenal 200 Breast. After crushing the race in Missoula, he was ready to do even more. He had a strong first 100, then picked up his tempo and closed incredibly well, earning a massive 7-second drop and smashing through the 3:00 barrier by 6 seconds. Sasha scored 9.5 points for Wave!

  • Ahana Bhattacharya has looked amazing in training leading up to the meet. Her awesome practice habits paid off big time at the meet, as she turned in best times in all six races and earned her first Senior Zones cut. She was ready to rock and roll in the 400 IM and crushed the race. She looked strong in the fly, destroyed the back, held strong in breast, and finished incredibly well on her way to a huge 12-second drop. Ahana scored 15 points for Wave!

  • Lucy Broyles had solid swims all weekend, making finals in two races and swimming well on the relays. She performed well in all of her backstroke events. She has been working on her sprint speed, and that really showed in her 50. She had increased tempo and a strong kick the whole way, leading to a half-second drop. Lucy scored 14 points for Wave!

  • Kamilla Bugaitsova has put in very solid training this season, especially in freestyle. She has been working on her shorter events, and that showed as she achieved best times in both sprint distances. She had an awesome 100 Free, with great tempo throughout, a fast turn, and a very strong finish, giving herself a very solid 1-second drop. Kamilla scored 2.5 points for Wave!

  • Kim Cui was a solid point-scorer for the team, making the finals in all three breast events. His main focus has been the 200, but he has been working on his pure speed for relays. He unleashed his speed in the 50 Breast. He had a great breakout, awesome tempo, and a strong kick, which resulted in a huge half-second drop, putting him under 34 for the first time. Kim scored 38.5 points for Wave!

  • Evan Deng is someone who always pushes himself at practice, both on dryland and in the pool. His efforts were rewarded with some absolutely incredible swims over the weekend. He walked away with not just his first but also his second Summer Sectionals qualifying time. He has shown great speed in the 50 Breast and has been training hard to carry that speed through his 100. In his individual 100 Breast, he went out and executed exactly that. He used his elite opening speed combined with a strong finish to give himself a 4-second drop and put him under the Sectionals qualifying time. Evan scored 1 point for Wave!

  • Lena Duryee had a blast turning in fast swims in the sprint events. She used her impressive power and speed to set three new best times. She crushed the 50 Free. She had a great start, incredible tempo, quick breaths, and a very strong finish, dropping half a second. Lena scored 6 points for Wave!

  • Ellen Feng was on fire all weekend, turning in best times in all her races, earning a new Futures cut, and setting two team open records. After a solid prelims swim in the 50 Fly, she knew that with a better breakout and finish, she could go even faster. In Finals, she put both pieces together, giving her a first-place finish, a sub :29 for the first time, and the fastest 50 Fly ever for Wave women. Ellen scored 124.5 points for Wave!

  • Joseph Foster was locked in for the whole weekend, achieving three huge best times. His mid-distance training has been going very well, and he absolutely crushed the 400 Free. He executed the strategy exactly as planned, taking it out fast, building through the middle, then finishing with everything left. This resulted in him dropping 3 seconds and putting him very close to breaking the 5:00 barrier for the first time.

  • Olivia Henaire was ready to unleash the beast, and that is exactly what she did, going best times in all her events and finishing in the Top 8 in everything. She had a phenomenal swim in the 1500 Free. She went out strong and settled into the pace very early on. She then methodically swam through the 800 before picking it up and speeding up down the stretch. She ended up in a dead sprint to the finish, which she won, giving her a second-place finish and a massive 24-second drop. Olivia scored 102.5 points for Wave!

  • Nora Herman has mostly been a distance swimmer but has really begun to hit her stride in the middle-distance events. She had three amazing swims in the 200 Free, going a best time in the relay, then in Prelims, and in a gutsy time trial going a third-best time and getting her first Senior Zones cut. Her time-trial 200 was incredible. She went out almost right at her best 100 time, then fought hard through the third 50 before finishing fast and getting her cut. Nora scored 3.5 points for Wave!

  • Dami Jung had a fantastic meet, going best times in all of her races and making finals in several events. She really showed off her sprint speed, making the A Final in the 100 Breast, 50 Breast, and 50 Free. She had a stellar 50 Breast in Prelims, dropping a half second. She then came back for Finals and absolutely threw down, blasting her way to a 1.5-second drop, moving her up 2 places and putting her under 36 for the first time. Dami scored 67 points for Wave!

  • Yihan Li was ready to rock and roll and swim fast. That is exactly what she did, posting three best times and earning her first Senior Zones cut. She was absolutely flying in the 50 Free during the 200 Medley Relay and parlayed that speed into a very solid individual 50 Free. She put together an incredibly fast swim, dropping time and qualifying for Senior Zones. Yihan scored 21.5 points for Wave!

  • Olivia Liu had a great weekend of racing. She recorded four best times, reached one individual final, and made her first Senior Zones cut. She saved her wildest performance for the final day of the meet. In Prelims, she crushed the 200 Fly, maintaining her breathing pattern throughout the race and finishing strong, giving her a 13-second drop and a trip to finals. In Finals, she put together an even better swim, finding the pace and locking it in for the final three 50s, dropping another 3 seconds and moving up two spots. Olivia scored 6 points for Wave!

  • Victor Lyakhovitski was ready to step up and compete for the first time in the 15&Over age group. He showed up focused and ready to go, leading to best times in all his races, an individual finals appearance, and his first Sectionals cut. After just missing the Sectionals cut in the 100 Back in March, he was ready for redemption. He had a stellar start, then used a strong kick and fast tempo down the stretch to drop 2 seconds and secure a Sectionals cut. Victor scored 5.5 points for Wave!

  • Jonah Lynn was incredibly excited to compete at his first long-course champs meet. He made the most of it, going two best times and being right at his best in his other races. He works incredibly hard, and it was awesome to see the payoff. He blasted his way to a huge best time in the 100 Free, using a great tempo, taking quicker breaths, and finishing strong.

  • Karina Maksyutov was well prepared, having trained exceptionally well leading up to the meet. Her strong training and preparation resulted in some awesome swims and four huge drops. She had an amazing swim in the 400 Free. She executed the strategy well, taking it out fast, staying strong through the second 100, attacking the third 100, and finishing strong, touching the wall a full 4.5 seconds faster than her previous best.

  • Alissa Nesterenko has previously shown elite sprint speed in freestyle races. Lately, she has been working to carry that speed into the longer events. That mindset proved successful as she qualified for Finals in both the 200 and 400 Free. She had a strong Prelims swim in the 400 Free, dropping 3 seconds and earning a second swim. She stepped up in Finals and dropped another second by swimming a stronger third 100 than in Prelims. Alissa scored 29 points for Wave!

  • Irene Qu showed up at the meet ready to dominate, and that is exactly what she did. She went best times in all her races, finished first in three races, earned two Futures cuts, and set a 13-14 team record. She had an amazing swim in the 100 Back. In Prelims, she used a fantastic start, steady tempo, and a strong kick to give herself a 2-second drop and her first Futures cut. She followed it up in Finals by racing incredibly well, dropping another second and finishing in first place. Irene led all of Wave in points, scoring 142.5!

  • Han Sun has been training steadily and continuing to improve throughout the season. He hit his stride at the meet, turning in very solid performances, including five best times. He showed he could do it all by crushing the 200 IM. He had a strong fly leg, then really turned it on through the back and breast before methodically closing the freestyle leg, resulting in a solid 2-second drop. Han scored 4.5 points for Wave!

  • Arjun Yadav has been doing an amazing job with his aerobic training. He turned that into several very strong swims throughout the meet, including best times in four events. He gutted out an awesome swim in his 400 Free. He had a very strong start, then held on well through the second 100 before really pushing the back 200 all the way into the finish for a huge 4-second drop. Arjun scored 3.5 points for Wave!

  • Andy Yang had a wonderful weekend of fast racing, posting best times in all his events and finishing in the Top 16 in each. While he was on point the entire weekend, he saved some serious fireworks for the final day in the 200 IM. He had a great Prelims swim, swimming all four legs well. He then pushed even harder in his Finals swim, coming close to the same time in the first three legs, then closing with much more speed than the morning, giving him another drop and putting him under 2:20 for the first time. Andy scored 63.5 points for Wave!

  • Isshin Yokoyama trains well across all four strokes and all distances. He showed that off with a very successful, versatile performance across strokes and distances, all on his way to six best times. He combined his speed and endurance to put together a fantastic 100 Breast. He was able to take it out very fast and held the tempo well through the back half, into a strong finish and a huge 6-second drop. Isshin scored 25 points for Wave!
