Sun, Speed, and Success at Colman Pool!
Age Group Seattle Open Meet Recap
Wave swimmers had a fantastic weekend at Colman Pool, enjoying sunshine, great racing, and plenty of success in the outdoor long course pool. For many athletes, it was their first long course meet, and they rose to the challenge with impressive performances, earning numerous new Championship qualifying times and a host of BB and B time standards. Leading the way was Lainey Meyer, who captured five event victories while adding three new A qualifying times to cap off an outstanding weekend.
Black Group
The coaches were very excited for our Black Group swimmers to have this experience: racing outdoors, seeing Colman for the first time, and gaining long-course experience. As a bonus, the weather cooperated, making it even more enjoyable. The kids seemed to have fun both at the meet and while exploring the beach outside the pool deck. Highlights:
Group A
Ryan Jin did wonderfully in his first-ever long course meet and used his strong kicking to power his way through his first 100m Free race and break 2:00!
Milan Krish gained valuable experience at this meet and will continue to grow and improve in the sport. Very happy to see him complete the 50m Fly for the first time!
Lily Smyth is fun to watch race, and we were so proud to see her complete all five of her races legally! Her long-course 100 Free time beat her short-course 100 Free time; that’s some serious improvement!
Lev Sukhin has been working hard and has made some stellar improvements over the past few months. We were so excited to see him put all his skills together and swim his first-ever legal 50 Breast, which included an excellent dive and a solid time!
Owen Zhang raced hard and learned a lot at this meet, which are great takeaways.
Group B
Ethan Chattopadhyay did a great job in his first Wave meet and looked like he was having fun. Very pleased to see him get three legal swims, including a legal 50 Breast, his first time doing it!
Asher Gan was one of our youngest swimmers at the meet, but he handled himself well, seemed to enjoy being there, and raced with good effort.
Jasmine Shetye did everything with a smile and raced hard in her events. It was great to see her working and improving. This was her first-ever long course meet, and we felt her freestyle looked much stronger than at previous meets.
Meher Srivastava competed for the first time ever as a Wave swimmer at this meet, and we were excited to get her started in this part of the sport!
Wilson Tan did exceptionally well for a young swimmer and even completed his first-ever 50 Breast! Very exciting to see him get that one done!
White Group
White Group had a great meet, with many swimmers racing long course for the first time. We achieved several new motivational times, and one swimmer earned her first-ever Champs cut! The coaches were very impressed! Congrats, White Group! Highlights:
Nysa Banerjee was our swimmer of the meet. She not only went 4/4 with best times, plus three new swims, but also earned five new BB times, one new B time, and her first-ever Champs cut with a fantastic 50 Breast!
After a race she wasn’t happy with, Poppy Covington listened to the coaches, went out fast in her 100 Free, stayed tough throughout the race, and dropped 13.2 seconds!
Simaya Gupta had a fantastic meet, with three best times, three new swims, and four new B times. Her best swim was her 100 Breast, where she showed how hard she’s been working in practice and dropped 19 seconds!
Finn Kirst swam just one day in his first-ever long-course meet and made the most of it, going 3/3 B times and earning a relay spot at PNS Champs! His 100 Free was especially fast, and he earned 9th place!
Charisha Jatana had a wonderful first-ever long-course meet with five legal swims. Her best swim was her 50 Breast, where she earned her first-ever B time!
Timothy Huang had an amazing meet, earning 5/5 best times and swimming the 50m Fly for the first time. He also picked up two new B times. His best swim was his 100 Breast, where he applied what he’s learned in practice to drop 7.6 seconds!
Sourish Annam raced like a pro in his first-ever long-course meet. In addition to four new B times and a 4th-place finish, he delivered a phenomenal 100 Breast, taking advantage of his glide to earn his first long-course BB time!
Purple Group
Purple Group had an awesome showing at the AG Seattle Open! This meet was full of great swims, with the group accomplishing 21 new B Times, 9 new BB Times, and 6 Champs Cuts—an amazing accomplishment! It was also great to see so few disqualifications. That shows the group's attention to the little things, ability to swim with confidence, and ability to execute races the right way. On top of the success in the pool, it was incredible to watch the team support each other in every race. We’re excited to see what our Champs qualifiers can accomplish in the next two weekends!!. Great job, Purple Group! Highlights:
A Group
Cayden Smith had a stellar weekend, earning a Top 5 finish in every event he swam! His standout swim was the 50 Fly; he not only earned 1st place but also achieved his first 13-14 Champs cut! He used a quick tempo and a strong kick throughout the race to accomplish this feat.
Mudit Singh had a stellar 200 Free this weekend, establishing an official long course time. He steadily built the entire race, using a smooth stroke and an efficient kick to deliver a solid performance!! On his last 50, he put his head down and finished fast, earning a heat win!
Victor Shirshov had an eventful but overall strong 200 IM. During the first 50, his goggles fell off, causing a slight blip; however, he bounced back quickly and swam a solid race, establishing his first long-course time. He built on the backstroke and breaststroke and finished with a fast freestyle!
Avni Garg used all the techniques we’ve worked on over the past few weeks and applied them to her 50 Back. Since moving into Purple, we’ve been focusing on her rotation in freestyle and backstroke; we’re working to eliminate an “inchworm-like” progression. She had a strong rotation, dropping 7 seconds!
Thomas Godbout has been steadily improving all summer. He’s shifted his focus at practice and has started to put in the work on his mid-distance freestyle. That hard work was on display this weekend as he cruised to a 12.5-second drop in his 200 free. He picked up his first BB time and just missed the Champs cut.
B Group
Ishana Goela not only raced well in her day at the AG Seattle Open but also displayed incredible sportsmanship. She tagged along for her younger sister’s 10&U session and cheered for many younger Wave swimmers. She carried this positivity into her session, where her sister and friends returned the sportsmanship.
Noah Chen had an incredible competition weekend; it’s hard to choose just one race, but his most memorable was his 50 Fly. He made an incredible catch paired with a strong kick, helping him swim a best time by 12 seconds!!
Arvaan Deshmukh used a strong breakout to drop 9 seconds in his 50 Breast. He got a strong start off the blocks, helping him get off to a fast start. He had a strong pull and finished his race well.
Ostap Lytvynovskyi paced his 200 Breast well. He took the first 50 out smoothly but fast, built the second and third 50s, and finished strong. He kept his head still and focused on himself, helping him drop 10 seconds in a tough race.
Pravan Shakya had a great debut in the 200m IM. As the last swimmer of the day for Wave, he cheered for every swimmer who raced before him. When it came time for his race, he used a steady butterfly, smooth backstroke, and quick freestyle to establish a strong time to build on in seasons to come.
High School
High School had about 50 swimmers competing at the meet. There were some incredible races from both A and B Groups. In true meet recap fashion, it is hard to pick just a few from both groups. Congrats to Arvin on picking up a champs cut! Highlights:
A Group:
Julien Wang raced in his final meet as a senior. He had a fantastic meet with a ton of time drops. He teched up for all his races to get the best times possible. His biggest drop was in his 100 Breast -35 seconds! His best event was his 50 Free, where he held his top-end speed to finish just shy of an A time.
Ian Chow went 6/6 in time drops! He had a great meet, racing well across the board! He dropped 8.86 seconds in his 200 Free and 4.35 seconds in his 100 Free.
Liam Donnelly had a great meet with some strong races! He had an impressive 200 Free, finishing strong with a negative split on his last 50. He has dropped -5.04 since May!
Zach Zeng had a fast 50 Breast! He got out fast and held on. He finished strong ahead of everyone in his heat to drop -13.81 seconds.
B Group:
Lindsey Caruso went 5/6 best times, plus one new event swum. She has been training really hard in practice lately and has been descending her times. She carried that form into her events at this meet, especially in her 100 Free, where she dropped 66 seconds, and in her 200 Free, where she dropped 46 seconds!
Arvin Kandiah had a great race in his 50 Breast, qualifying for Champs. His plan was to get out fast and stay ahead of the pack. He executed that plan, dropping 2.23 seconds to qualify!
Ilia Maksimchuck had several quality races. His best event was his 100 Fly where he recorded his biggest time drop: -2.97 seconds!
Diana Omusuru swam in her last meet with Wave before departing for Europe. She wanted to go out with a bang, and she did just that! She set a goal to get up and race every event, and she did. Her biggest time drop was in the 100 free: -36.14 seconds!
Age Group 1
Age Group 1 had a great meet at the AG Open. We had a full slate of kids at the meet, with most in the group using it as their last run at Champs cuts and/or their last long-course swim of the season. I was super excited to see how well the whole group did. We picked up some new Champs cuts over the weekend, achieved some new motivational times, and had some all-around fast and fun swimming. Great job to the group. Highlights:
Aurora Zhou crushed the weekend with some great swims throughout and 5 best times. She absolutely crushed her 50 Fly with a big 8-second drop, keeping her stroke long and her hips up, and dominated the event.
Katherine Wu had two swims over the weekend and dominated both. Her standout swim was in her 100 Breast, where she kept her stroke smooth and her kick powerful, resulting in a great swim and a great time, dropping 6 seconds.
Gavin Liu had a great weekend of swimming, with several first-time swims and time drops. His standout swim was his 50 Breast, where he completed his first-ever legal 50 Breast and, with his tempo and speed, knocked out a BB Time.
Felix Henaire crushed the weekend with 3 best times and some great races in his other events. He crushed his 200 Free, dropping 11 seconds, showing that hard work and leading the lane over the past few weeks have really helped him maintain his endurance throughout the race.
Sophia Eleryan had a great weekend with nothing but the best times. She crushed her 100 Back, dropping 3 seconds with a great kick throughout her race.
Age Group 2
AG2 had 36 swimmers at the meet, with several swimming just one or two races to get ready for Champs. We picked up 24 new Champs cuts, several of which were first-time long course races. Great job at Colman, AG2!! Highlights:
Johanna Burg trains very hard and applies what she learns as well as anyone in AG2. She’s made tremendous progress this summer and saw a big payoff with her first five B times as an 11-yr-old and 7/7 best times. Her best swim was her 100 Fly, where she kept her stroke together throughout the race, dropping 17.5 seconds and moving up to 6th place!
Bianca Stanciu earned her first-ever 11-12 Champs cut on the last day with a tremendous 100 Breast. She’s worked hard to get her stroke timing right, and she nailed it, dropping 4.6 seconds to move up to 3rd and set a new BB time!
Cloris Cui trains hard every day, and it showed at the meet, where she went 4/5 best times and swam two races for the first time in long course. In both races—the 200 Back and 200 Breast—she focused on her technique and earned two new B times!
Yeim Jung is one of our vocal leaders at practice and has really stepped up his effort in the last few weeks. It showed at Colman, where he went 4/4, best times, with solid drops in each race. His best race was the 100 Free, where he blew away the competition with a speedy flip turn and a breakout that put him more than a body length ahead. He finished with a 5.46-second drop, moving up to 1st place.
Sophie Liu works hard day in and day out. She had a monster meet, going 7/7 best times (including her DQ) and earning three Top 8 finishes. Her best race came in her weakest stroke: the 50 Back. She’s worked hard to improve her body position to strengthen her catch, and it showed as she dropped 3.57 seconds!
Senior Prep
SR Prep only had a few kids down at the meet. This was the last chance for the kids to aim for Champs cuts and for some big Long Course Swimming time drops. Overall, the group did an awesome job, with some great swims and some awesome time drops. Great job, whole group. Highlights:
Lucas Deng raced strong with some great times. He had a great 100 Free, keeping his kick strong and swimming a great B time.
Avery Lee had a strong weekend, but unfortunately came down sick and missed the last day. She still had some great swims to kick off the meet over the first two days, including a 1st place finish in the 50 Breast.
Alex Yang had a really strong meet, with a big-time second drop in his 50 Free and his first Long Course BB time in the event. He had great tempo and a strong finish for an awesome swim.
